Beijing Expands Film Subsidies After Record Qingming Festival Box Office

Beijing has announced an extension of its spring film subsidy program following a historic box-office performance during the 2026 Qingming Festival holiday. The initiative, designed to boost cultural consumption, will continue offering discounted cinema tickets and cross-industry promotions to sustain public engagement with the arts.

The three-day Qingming Festival period, which concluded yesterday, saw total box office revenue reach 305 million yuan ($42.7 million), including advance sales, with 1.45 million screenings held nationwide. This marks the highest-grossing Qingming film market on record, according to data from major ticketing platforms.

This year's lineup featured a mix of historical epics and contemporary realist dramas, catering to diverse audience preferences. Analysts attribute the surge to both compelling content and the subsidy program's success in making cinema accessible. The policy extension aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the cultural sector's post-pandemic recovery while fostering creative industries.
