Xinjiang’s Taklimakan Desert Sees Green Expansion Boosted by Machinery in 2026

Hotan Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is spearheading an ambitious ecological initiative this year, deploying advanced machinery to rehabilitate 2.23 million mu (approximately 1,487 square kilometers) of desertified land. The project includes planting 266,900 mu of artificial forest, with 150,700 mu scheduled for completion during the current spring planting season.

Local authorities report that mechanized planting techniques have accelerated progress along the edges of the Taklimakan Desert, the world's second-largest shifting sand desert. The initiative forms part of China's broader strategy to combat desertification while balancing economic development and ecological preservation. Observers note the project's potential to create sustainable livelihoods for Uygur communities and protect vital infrastructure from sand encroachment.
