UNESCO has appointed Chinese academic and physicist Chen Qun as its new Assistant Director-General for Education, marking a significant step in its mission to transform global learning systems. The announcement, made this week, positions Chen to lead efforts in advancing equitable education and equipping learners with future-ready skills under Director-General Khaled El-Enany's leadership.
Chen brings over three decades of academic and executive experience to the role, including groundbreaking work in science education reform. His appointment follows UNESCO's January 2026 leadership restructuring that saw three women appointed to senior positions: Sweden's Asa Regner as Deputy Director-General, Mozambique's Lidia Brito overseeing African priorities, and Bulgaria's Mariya Gabriel leading communication initiatives.
El-Enany, who became UNESCO's first Arab and second African director-general in November 2025, emphasized that Chen's appointment strengthens the organization's capacity to address global education disparities. The move comes as UNESCO implements its 2030 Sustainable Development Goals framework, with quality education remaining a key priority.
Education analysts suggest Chen's background in both physical sciences and pedagogical innovation could bridge STEM education gaps while promoting digital literacy across developing economies. His first major challenge will be overseeing UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring Report scheduled for release in late 2026.
