Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong has emphasized the urgent need to modernize the nation's water infrastructure during a four-day inspection tour of Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces this week. The initiative aims to enhance water security, optimize resource allocation, and strengthen flood prevention systems amid growing climate challenges.
Strategic Infrastructure Upgrades
Liu, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, reviewed key projects including reservoirs, irrigation systems, and rural water supply networks. He highlighted the Xin'an River and Poyang Lake management programs as models for balancing ecological preservation with practical resource needs.
Flood Preparedness and Agricultural Focus
During on-site assessments of flood control measures, Liu called for rigorous hazard inspections and improved hydrological forecasting. The vice premier also examined early rice seedling cultivation and rapeseed farming, linking water efficiency to food security goals.
Cross-Sector Coordination
The modernization plan prioritizes interprovincial coordination to build a 'national water network core framework.' Measures include promoting water-saving irrigation technologies and standardizing management of transregional rivers and lakes.
