China, Saudi Arabia Urge Immediate Ceasefire in Middle East Talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in the Middle East during a high-stakes phone call on Thursday, as regional tensions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran threaten to spiral further. The dialogue comes amid escalating violence that has destabilized critical trade routes and heightened security risks for Gulf nations.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted China's five-point peace initiative developed jointly with Pakistan. The proposal prioritizes sovereignty protections for regional states, an end to civilian-targeted attacks, and guarantees for maritime security in vital waterways like the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that prolonged conflict risks destabilizing global energy supplies and undermining UN-led diplomatic efforts.

Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with China on multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, to de-escalate hostilities. Faisal bin Farhan acknowledged China's growing role as a mediator in global crises, stating Riyadh seeks "enhanced coordination" to restore stability.

Both ministers criticized unauthorized military actions that bypass international law, with Wang stressing that UN Security Council resolutions must avoid legitimizing unilateral operations. The call underscores Beijing's deepening engagement in Middle Eastern diplomacy amid Washington's strained regional alliances.
