Mainland Criticizes Taiwan’s Industrial Decoupling Push

A Chinese mainland spokesperson has condemned recent attempts by Taiwan authorities to reduce economic integration, calling them politically motivated maneuvers that threaten regional stability. Zhang Han of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office issued the rebuke on Wednesday during a press conference in Beijing.

The remarks came in response to statements by Lai Ching-te, leader of the Taiwan region, advocating for supply chain partnerships with "like-minded" entities to decrease reliance on the mainland. Zhang characterized the strategy as "an economic facade for separatist agendas," warning that transferring key industries to foreign partners jeopardizes Taiwan's economic future.

"This so-called decoupling scheme serves only to betray Taiwan residents' interests while advancing the Democratic Progressive Party's unpopular 'independence' fantasies," Zhang stated. The spokesperson emphasized that cross-strait industrial cooperation remains crucial for Taiwan's semiconductor sector and broader economic health.

The exchange occurs amid heightened tensions following recent DPP-led measures restricting mainland investment in Taiwan's technology sector. Analysts note that over 40% of Taiwan's electronics exports currently flow to the Chinese mainland, creating complex interdependencies.

Zhang reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to peaceful development of cross-strait relations but warned against "any attempts to fragment China's territorial integrity through economic means." The spokesperson urged Taiwan businesses to reject what she called "short-sighted political manipulation" undermining mutual prosperity.
