China and Bhutan Advance Border Talks in Beijing Meeting

China and Bhutan concluded their 15th Expert Group Meeting in Beijing this week, marking another step toward resolving their long-standing border issues. Held from March 30 to April 1, the discussions focused on advancing the Three-Step Roadmap, a bilateral agreement signed in 2021 to clarify disputed areas and formalize boundary delineation.

Co-chaired by Hou Yanqi, director general of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs, and Letho Tobdhen Tangbi, Bhutan's International Boundaries secretary, the meeting emphasized mutual progress. Both sides acknowledged advancements made since 2021 and agreed to maintain momentum for future negotiations, with plans to hold the next round of talks in Bhutan.

The Three-Step Roadmap, now in its fifth year, has guided technical discussions through joint teams working on non-disputed boundary alignment. Analysts view the sustained dialogue as a positive signal for regional stability, particularly amid broader geopolitical shifts in Asia.

While no timeline was announced for final demarcation, the commitment to 'candid and constructive' talks reflects growing diplomatic trust. Observers note that resolving the border issue could deepen economic and cultural ties between the two neighbors.
