Deadly Blast Hits Chongqing Highway Tunnel Construction Site, 4 Killed

Four workers were killed and nine others injured in a blast at a highway tunnel construction site in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on March 30, 2026, according to local authorities. The incident occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m. local time during work on a section of the national highway connecting Hubei and Sichuan provinces.

Wanzhou District's transport commission confirmed rescue operations concluded late Tuesday, with no workers remaining unaccounted for. Initial reports indicated one person missing and 12 injured, but updated figures were released following a full site inspection. The cause of the blast remains under investigation.

Chongqing, a major hub for infrastructure development in western China, has seen accelerated highway and rail projects this year as part of broader regional connectivity efforts. The Hubei-Sichuan highway is considered critical for streamlining cross-provincial logistics and tourism.
