China Defends Countermeasures Against Japanese Lawmaker Over Taiwan Interference

China reaffirmed this week that its sanctions against Japanese lawmaker Keiji Furuya align with international norms, following accusations of his repeated interference in cross-strait affairs. The measures come amid heightened tensions over what Beijing calls 'provocative collusion' between foreign politicians and separatist forces in the Taiwan region.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated on March 25 that the actions were 'necessary to safeguard national sovereignty' under Chinese law. 'The Taiwan question remains at the core of China's fundamental interests and brooks no external interference,' she emphasized during a press conference in Beijing.

The controversy centers on Furuya's alleged coordination with what Chinese authorities describe as 'Taiwan independence' elements. Zhu accused the Japanese politician of 'crossing red lines' through activities that undermine stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Chinese officials also criticized Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party administration for what they termed 'exploiting external partnerships' to advance political agendas. The developments occur as regional observers monitor diplomatic interactions ahead of key international summits this year.
