China, Philippines Seek Stable Ties Amid Regional Shifts

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong emphasized the importance of maintaining a stable and healthy bilateral relationship with the Philippines during high-level talks held on March 28, 2026, in Quanzhou. The discussions, co-chaired by Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Leo Herrera-Lim, marked the 24th round of diplomatic consultations between the two nations.

Sun underscored that friendly cooperation has long defined China-Philippines relations, adding that constructive dialogue aligns with the fundamental interests of both countries. He welcomed Manila’s stated commitment to stabilizing ties and urged practical steps to foster mutual trust.

Herrera-Lim reaffirmed the Philippines’ adherence to the one-China policy, describing the 1975 Joint Communique as the foundation of bilateral relations. He explicitly acknowledged Taiwan as part of China and emphasized that cross-strait affairs are internal matters for Beijing to resolve.

Both sides pledged to enhance coordination within ASEAN frameworks, citing the need to address complex regional challenges. They also agreed to advance East Asian cooperation initiatives to safeguard shared stability and economic growth.
