Japan Defense Minister Calls SDF Officer’s Embassy Breach ‘Regrettable’

Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi described a recent intrusion by a Self-Defense Forces (SDF) officer into the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo as "deeply regrettable" during a press conference on March 27, 2026. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, involved Kodai Murata, a 23-year-old second lieutenant stationed at Camp Ebino in Miyazaki Prefecture, who allegedly scaled the embassy’s wall and threatened Chinese diplomatic personnel.

Murata was arrested by Japanese police and transferred to prosecutors on suspicion of illegal entry. The Chinese Embassy confirmed the intruder identified himself as an active-duty SDF officer and has lodged a formal protest, demanding a full explanation from Japanese authorities. Koizumi emphasized that disciplinary action would follow once all facts are clarified, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to legal compliance and bilateral stability.

This incident highlights heightened sensitivities in regional diplomacy amid ongoing efforts to maintain cross-strait and Asia-Pacific cooperation frameworks. Analysts suggest it may prompt renewed discussions about security protocols for foreign missions in Japan.
