China Urges US to Foster Healthy Trade Ties, Avoid ‘Vicious’ Competition

Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao emphasized the need for China and the US to prioritize mutually beneficial cooperation over 'vicious competition' during a meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on March 26, 2026. The talks occurred on the sidelines of the WTO's 14th Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé, Cameroon, where both sides discussed economic relations and multilateral reforms.

Wang described economic and trade ties as a 'ballast stone and propeller' for bilateral relations, urging adherence to commitments made during recent leader-level discussions. He called for enhanced communication to ensure 'healthy, stable, and sustainable' development of trade relations, while also raising concerns about US Section 301 investigations targeting Chinese industries.

Greer acknowledged progress in US-China economic consultations over the past year and expressed willingness to strengthen dialogue under WTO and regional frameworks. Both parties agreed to collaborate on advancing WTO reforms and supporting outcomes at upcoming APEC and G20 meetings.

The meeting reflects ongoing efforts to stabilize relations amid global economic uncertainties, with Wang stressing China's readiness to address 'overcapacity' allegations through structured dialogue.
