China Leads Global Scientific Research Output, Says Elsevier Executive

At the 2026 Zhongguancun Forum in Beijing, Arnold Pippel, senior vice president of Dutch academic publisher Elsevier, affirmed China's dominant position in global scientific research. 'China now ranks first globally in the number of scientific articles published – output exceeding the US and Europe combined,' Pippel stated during the event running through March 29.

Pippel emphasized that China's research leadership extends beyond quantity, with measurable improvements in quality and citation impact. He attributed this growth to sustained government investment in STEM fields, strategic international partnerships, and focused recruitment of top-tier scientific talent.

The Elsevier executive also addressed artificial intelligence's transformative role in research, noting: 'While AI accelerates discovery, it cannot generate trust. Maintaining research integrity remains crucial as we adopt new technologies.'

Now in its 19th year, the Zhongguancun Forum has become a key platform for cross-sector collaboration, connecting over 1,200 global scientists, tech executives, and policymakers. This year's focus on integrating technological and industrial innovation aligns with China's broader push to translate research breakthroughs into practical applications.
