China-Laos Railway Surpasses 80M Tonnes in Cargo Milestone

The China-Laos Railway, a cornerstone of regional connectivity, has transported over 80 million tonnes of cargo since its launch in December 2021, with cross-border shipments exceeding 18 million tonnes. The 1,000-kilometer rail link, stretching from Kunming in the Chinese mainland to Vientiane in Laos, has become a vital artery for trade and economic cooperation across Southeast Asia.

Operational data released this week reveals a dramatic expansion in freight services, with daily train operations surging from two in 2021 to a current peak of 23. As of March 26, 2026, more than 71,000 freight trains have traversed the route, carrying over 3,800 types of goods—a staggering increase from the initial 10-item catalog that included basic commodities like fertilizers and rubber.

This year alone, the railway has moved 5.64 million tonnes of cargo, reinforcing its role as a linchpin of the Belt and Road Initiative. Its network now spans 19 countries and regions, including Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore, with over 20,000 international freight trains dispatched to date. Chemical products, textiles, and advanced manufacturing components dominate recent shipments, reflecting the region's evolving industrial demands.

China Railway Kunming Group attributes the railway's success to streamlined customs processes and growing demand for efficient land-based transport alternatives. The route has significantly reduced logistics costs for landlocked Laos while providing the Chinese mainland's southwestern provinces with direct access to ASEAN markets.
