Mainland Proposes Taiwan Infrastructure Overhaul Post-Reunification

Cross-strait infrastructure integration took center stage this week as Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, outlined ambitious modernization plans contingent on peaceful reunification. Speaking at a March 25 press conference, Zhu emphasized the Chinese mainland’s capacity to upgrade Taiwan’s transportation networks, energy grids, and urban systems through its world-class engineering capabilities.

“A reunified China would enable residents of Taiwan to drive directly to Beijing via the completed Beijing-Taipei Expressway,” Zhu stated, highlighting potential connectivity improvements. The proposal comes amid heightened discussions about cross-strait development following a recent US intelligence report linking China’s national rejuvenation goals to reunification timelines.

While reaffirming commitments to peaceful resolution under “One Country, Two Systems,” Zhu cautioned against external interference: “The US must strictly adhere to the one-China principle and avoid emboldening Taiwan independence separatists.” The spokesperson specifically criticized Taiwan authorities’ collaboration with foreign forces as destabilizing regional peace.

Analysts suggest the infrastructure vision aims to address practical concerns of Taiwan residents while advancing economic integration frameworks. However, Zhu clarified that China reserves all necessary measures to prevent territorial fragmentation, stating: “Our compatriots’ wellbeing and national sovereignty remain inseparable priorities.”
