Chinese innovation reached new heights in 2025 as the country became the third-largest filer of European patent applications, according to the European Patent Office's annual Technology Dashboard released this week. With 22,031 applications – a 9.7% annual increase – China now accounts for nearly 11% of all EPO filings, outpacing growth rates of other major economies.
The digital communication sector dominated Chinese applications, while transport and semiconductor technologies saw explosive 30% growth. This strategic focus aligns with global demand for AI-enabled infrastructure and green energy solutions.
Huawei solidified its position as a global tech leader with 4,744 applications, ranking second among all companies worldwide. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL) entered the top 10 for the first time, reflecting China's battery technology dominance. Four other Chinese firms – Xiaomi, ZTE, OPPO, and Tencent – secured spots in the top 50 applicants.
EPO President Antonio Campinos noted: 'These figures confirm Europe's role as a critical market for cutting-edge technologies. The 1.4% overall increase to 201,974 applications highlights sustained global innovation despite economic headwinds.'
With computer technology and AI-related patents driving much of the growth, these developments position Chinese companies at the forefront of next-generation technological development while strengthening Europe's innovation ecosystem.
