China, Kenya Strengthen Ties with New Trade Pact, Zero-Tariff Deal

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng concluded a four-day visit to Kenya this week, marking a significant step in bolstering economic cooperation and cross-continental partnerships. The visit, which included high-level meetings and business forum engagements, focused on aligning development strategies under China's 15th Five-Year Plan and Kenya's economic ambitions.

Economic Synergy Takes Center Stage

At the China-Kenya Business Forum, Han announced accelerated implementation of a zero-tariff policy for 98% of taxable items from Kenya to the Chinese mainland, effective May 1. This move comes as both nations seek to operationalize their community with a shared future for the new era framework established in April 2025.

Infrastructure and Strategic Alignment

Han toured the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway dispatch center, highlighting China's continued investment in Kenya's transport infrastructure. Kenyan Deputy President Kithure Kindiki emphasized plans to position Kenya as China's gateway to African markets, leveraging new trade facilitation measures.

Diplomatic Foundations Reinforced

President William Ruto reaffirmed Kenya's adherence to the one-China principle during talks, while Han expressed appreciation for Nairobi's support on core issues. The leaders witnessed the signing of multiple cooperation documents spanning technology transfer, agricultural development, and green energy initiatives.

Global Governance Collaboration

In meetings with UN officials based in Nairobi, Han pledged China's commitment to multilateralism through enhanced UN collaboration. This aligns with Kenya's growing role in regional security and climate change mitigation efforts across East Africa.
