China, Kenya Strengthen Trade Ties with Zero-Tariff Push

China has pledged to deepen economic collaboration with Kenya through expanded trade agreements and a landmark zero-tariff policy, as announced at the China-Kenya Business Forum in Nairobi on March 24, 2026. Chinese Vice President Han Zheng outlined a three-pronged strategy to bolster bilateral relations, emphasizing strategic alignment, green energy partnerships, and multilateral trade reforms.

Strategic Alignment and Resource Development

Han reaffirmed China's commitment to aligning its development strategies with Kenya Vision 2030, aiming to transform Kenya's resource advantages into sustainable growth. This includes technical support for agricultural modernization and infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative framework.

Expanding Trade Horizons

With China as Kenya's largest trading partner and Kenya serving as China's top East African counterpart, both nations plan to expand cooperation in digital economies and renewable energy. Han highlighted that over 1,000 Chinese enterprises currently operate in Kenya, contributing to local employment and technological advancement.

Zero-Tariff Policy and Multilateralism

Starting May 1, 2026, China will implement zero tariffs for 53 African nations, including Kenya. Kenyan Deputy President Kithure Kindiki praised the move, stating Kenya aims to become a gateway for Chinese exports to Africa while increasing shipments of tea, coffee, and avocados to the Chinese mainland.

The forum concluded with both sides pledging to uphold an open global trading system, positioning Kenya as a key beneficiary of China's 15th Five-Year Plan development blueprint.
