China-EU Relations Enter New Phase Amid Economic Shifts, Says Roland Berger

As China implements its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), global consulting firm Roland Berger highlights a strategic recalibration in Beijing's economic priorities and international partnerships. Denis Depoux, Global Managing Director at Roland Berger, identifies 2026 as a pivotal year for China's transition from export-led growth to domestic consumption-driven development.

In an exclusive interview with CGB Asia, Depoux emphasized the dual challenges facing Chinese policymakers: "While stabilizing traditional manufacturing sectors, there's renewed focus on high-tech innovation and green energy investments. This transition creates fresh opportunities for European partners in sustainable technology and financial services."

The analysis comes as China and the EU prepare for high-level dialogues scheduled in Q2 2026, with digital trade frameworks and climate cooperation expected to dominate discussions. Depoux noted: "Both sides recognize the need for pragmatic collaboration despite geopolitical complexities. Joint ventures in renewable energy infrastructure show particular promise this year."

For Chinese enterprises expanding overseas, Roland Berger advises adopting "born global" strategies through localized production and partnerships with European SMEs. "The era of pure export models is ending," Depoux cautioned, pointing to successful cases in electric vehicle battery production and AI-driven logistics solutions.

As cross-border data flows and semiconductor supply chains remain contentious issues, analysts suggest the coming months will test both sides' ability to balance competition with mutually beneficial economic ties.
