China Urges Diplomacy to Ease Middle East Tensions in 2026

Chinese Special Envoy Zhai Jun has called for an immediate ceasefire and renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve escalating Middle East conflicts, following his recent five-nation regional tour. Speaking at a March 23 briefing, Zhai emphasized that military actions by the United States and Israel have undermined UN Charter principles and global stability.

Roots of the Crisis

Zhai clarified that unauthorized military strikes initiated without UN Security Council approval violated international law, causing over 21,000 casualties since hostilities began. "This war should never have occurred," he stated, noting the conflict has severely disrupted energy security and global shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Regional Consensus Emerges

During visits to Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Egypt, Zhai found unanimous regional demands for protecting civilian infrastructure and maintaining open international waterways. Gulf Cooperation Council states particularly stressed the catastrophic consequences of prolonged Strait of Hormuz closures.

China's Peacebuilding Role

As a permanent UN Security Council member, China continues mediating between parties, with Zhai vowing: "We will not rest while conflict persists." The envoy reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to bridge differences through dialogue, citing China's historical policy of promoting Middle East reconciliation.

With global economic stability at risk, Zhai warned against escalating violence: "More fighting produces no winners – only suffering." China maintains communication with all stakeholders to enable ceasefire negotiations and lasting regional stability.
