Boao Forum 2026: AI Drives China’s Ocean Economy Innovation

As the Boao Forum for Asia prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary from March 24-27 in Hainan Province, global attention turns to how artificial intelligence is reshaping China's maritime sector. With the forum occurring amid evolving global economic challenges, this year's focus on technological innovation comes at a pivotal moment for Asia's largest economy.

Smart Ports Set New Standards

China's position as the world's top exporter and second-largest importer in 2025 – with foreign trade hitting 45.47 trillion yuan ($6.48 trillion) – has pushed coastal ports to adopt cutting-edge solutions. At Ningbo-Zhoushan Port's Meishan terminal, four-legged inspection robots now complete container checks in 20 minutes, a task that previously required 4-6 workers for an hour. This 300% efficiency gain maintains 99% accuracy while reducing safety risks.

5G Networks Transform Operations

Tianjin Port's integration of 5G private networks, Beidou satellite positioning, and AI demonstrates China's comprehensive automation strategy. The system enables real-time coordination between cranes, trucks, and ships – crucial for handling the 7.6% year-on-year cargo volume increase reported in Q1 2026.

Forum delegates will examine how these innovations support China's broader ocean economy development while addressing global supply chain concerns. As BFA Secretary-General Li Baodong noted: 'When technology meets tradition, we create sustainable pathways for maritime development that benefit all Asia.'
