China Launches Independent Journal List to Boost Global Academic Influence

China unveiled a domestically developed high-quality journal list for medicine and life sciences on March 21, 2026, marking a strategic move to strengthen its role in global academic evaluation systems. Compiled through collaboration between Dongbi Technology Data Co., the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the initiative aims to provide researchers and institutions with a Chinese perspective on journal quality assessment.

The list features 4,027 medical journals and 3,064 life sciences publications, categorized into four tiers based on citation data from 2023 to 2025. Tier A represents elite publications, while Tiers B and C form the academic core. Tier D highlights emerging specialties, creating a pyramid structure designed to guide research submissions and institutional evaluations.

Qiu Xiaochun, deputy director of the medical committee of the Library Society of China, emphasized the list's significance: "This represents China's growing capacity to shape academic discourse while maintaining rigorous international standards." The project leverages big data analytics to reduce reliance on foreign evaluation systems, particularly in fast-evolving fields like precision medicine and synthetic biology.

Academic institutions across the Chinese mainland have begun integrating the list into their research assessment frameworks. Analysts suggest this could influence global publication trends as China's scientific output continues expanding, particularly in biotechnology and public health research.
