Australian swimmer Cameron McEvoy made history on Friday at the China Open Swimming Championships in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, clocking a groundbreaking 20.88 seconds in the men's 50-meter freestyle. The 31-year-old Olympian surpassed the 17-year-old record of 20.91 seconds set by Brazil's Cesar Cielo Filho in 2009, pending official ratification.
"It feels crazy," McEvoy told reporters after the race. "I've been aiming to go under 21 seconds for a long time. Even 20.99 would have meant a lot – but 20.88 is very exciting." The veteran athlete attributed his success to refined training methods emphasizing strength development, noting 2026 marked the first year he could fully implement his optimized regimen.
The record-breaking performance at Shenzhen's state-of-the-art aquatic center reinforces McEvoy's status as a leading figure in competitive swimming. With this achievement, the Olympic and world champion sets a new benchmark ahead of major international competitions later this year.
