A China Southern Airlines Airbus A330 bound for Shenzhen made an emergency return to Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport on Saturday after a bird strike severely damaged its nose cone. Flight CZ3554, carrying passengers from Shanghai, encountered the incident just 20 minutes after takeoff at 12:43 p.m. local time.
Passengers reported hearing unusual noises followed by slight turbulence, with crew members confirming the bird strike through onboard announcements. Upon landing at 1:06 p.m., visible damage to the aircraft's radome – the protective covering for weather radar systems – became apparent, prompting ground crews to secure the area with protective shields.
The airline activated emergency protocols immediately, arranging replacement travel and passenger services. "Our pilots followed all standard procedures to ensure safety," a China Southern representative stated, emphasizing that no injuries occurred among the 200 passengers and crew members.
Aviation safety experts highlighted that modern aircraft like the Airbus A330 are designed to withstand such impacts, with pilots trained extensively for emergency returns. The incident caused a five-hour delay before a replacement aircraft completed the journey to Shenzhen.
This event marks the third reported bird strike incident in the Chinese mainland's aviation sector this year, underscoring ongoing challenges in wildlife management near major airports.
