An independent committee investigating the 2025 Wang Fuk Court fire in Tai Po, China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), commenced its first public hearings on March 19, 2026. The proceedings aim to establish accountability for the deadly residential blaze and propose preventive measures to enhance public safety.
Thirty-eight stakeholders, including HKSAR government departments, affected residents, and former members of the housing estate's management body, have been granted participatory rights. Witness testimonies and evidence submissions will form the basis of the committee's final report, due within nine months of its December 2025 formation by HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee.
Ms. Lee, a former Wang Tai House resident, expressed hope that the hearings would clarify the fire's rapid spread and high casualty count. 'We need answers to prevent future tragedies,' she told reporters outside the hearing venue.
Chaired by Justice David Lok, the committee will conduct eight sessions through April 2, with 360 public seats available per hearing. Half of these seats are reserved for Wang Fuk Court residents directly impacted by the disaster.
