Golden eagles and white-tailed eagles have become increasingly visible in Beijing's suburban skies this winter and spring, with wildlife photographers documenting over 120 confirmed sightings since December 2025. The resurgence of these apex predators coincides with expanded habitat restoration projects across the capital's mountainous northern districts.
"What began as occasional sightings in 2023 has become regular documentation in 2026," said conservationist Dr. Li Wei from Peking University. "The eagles' return demonstrates successful implementation of China's 2021-2025 ecological civilization plan, particularly in air quality improvement and forest conservation."
Authorities report a 40% reduction in industrial emissions within Beijing's ecological preservation zones since 2022, while forest coverage has reached 45% in Miyun District – critical habitat for migratory raptors. New wildlife corridors completed in 2025 now connect previously fragmented habitats across the Yan Mountains.
The phenomenon has sparked eco-tourism interest, with responsible birdwatching tours being developed through partnerships between environmental groups and local communities. However, conservationists urge visitors to maintain safe distances from nesting sites, particularly during the current spring breeding season.
