Vietnam, China Strengthen Strategic Ties Through ‘3+3’ Dialogue

HANOI – Vietnam and China have taken a significant step in advancing bilateral cooperation as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam met with senior Chinese officials on March 16, 2026. The discussions centered on implementing the newly established '3+3' strategic dialogue mechanism covering diplomacy, defense, and public security.

The high-level meeting in Hanoi marked the first ministerial gathering under this framework, initiated by both countries' leadership to address evolving global challenges. Lam emphasized that the mechanism 'reflects the high degree of political mutual trust' between the two neighbors and serves as a crucial pillar for building 'a Vietnam-China community with a shared future.'

Against the backdrop of what Lam described as 'a complex and volatile international situation,' both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening solidarity. The Vietnamese leader acknowledged China's role as 'a pillar of stability in a turbulent world,' while reiterating Hanoi's adherence to the one-China policy and support for Beijing's global initiatives.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the dialogue's strategic significance, stating it demonstrates how 'the two major socialist countries will join hands to safeguard political system security.' The mechanism represents a new stage in bilateral cooperation, with both sides agreeing to enhance political alignment and deepen practical collaboration across multiple sectors.

The meeting also saw progress in security coordination, with Chinese Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong and Defense Minister Dong Jun briefing their Vietnamese counterparts on ongoing cooperation efforts. The discussions concluded with mutual commitments to increase people-to-people exchanges and multilateral coordination, particularly in addressing regional stability concerns.
