China Brokers Dialogue to Ease Afghanistan-Pakistan Border Tensions

China has intensified diplomatic efforts to stabilize South Asia, with Special Envoy on Afghan Affairs Yue Xiaoyong concluding an eight-day mediation mission between Afghanistan and Pakistan on March 14. The shuttle diplomacy comes amid heightened border security concerns following recent clashes between the neighboring states.

Yue held talks with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi and Minister of Industry and Commerce Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi in Kabul, emphasizing economic cooperation as a foundation for stability. Sources indicate discussions addressed cross-border trade mechanisms and infrastructure connectivity under Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative framework.

Analysts suggest China's proactive role reflects its growing influence in regional conflict resolution, particularly following the 2025 withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan. The mediation aligns with Beijing's stated goals of preventing spillover effects that could impact projects in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

While neither Afghanistan nor Pakistan has released official statements regarding breakthrough agreements, both nations have welcomed continued dialogue. Observers note this marks China's most direct involvement in Afghanistan-Pakistan relations since the 2024 Shanghai Cooperation Organization counterterrorism pact.
