Chinese Carmakers Drive into Central Europe at Hungary Auto Show

Hungary's Hungexpo transformed into a showcase of automotive ambition this week as Chinese automakers seized the spotlight at the International Automobile and Tuning Show 2026. Brands like Geely, BAIC, and MG unveiled cutting-edge electric and hybrid vehicles, signaling a strategic push into Central and Eastern Europe's competitive markets.

Geely made waves on Friday by announcing its formal entry into Hungary, presenting two EU-compliant SUVs developed at its German R&D center. Over 200 test drives were booked within three hours, underscoring local interest. "Hungary will serve as our gateway to Eastern Europe," declared Geely Hungary General Manager Yang Cheng, outlining plans for regional logistics hubs and service networks.

First-time exhibitor BAIC surprised organizers with strong visitor engagement. "We're laying groundwork for 15 dealerships nationwide," revealed BAIC Hungary's Daniel Pataki, while MG showcased Europe-designed electric models at its fourth Budapest appearance. The displays highlight China's growing EV expertise, with multiple brands offering 7-year warranties that outpace European rivals.

Attendee Sandor Korsos captured the shifting consumer sentiment: "Chinese models now compete on price, quality, and innovation. My next car will likely come from China." As automakers convert showroom interest into dealership networks, Central Europe's roads may soon reflect Beijing's automotive ambitions.
