Mainland Condemns Taiwan Leader’s ‘Independence’ Remarks

The Chinese mainland has strongly criticized Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te for recent remarks advocating separatism, reaffirming Beijing's unwavering stance on national sovereignty. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, issued the rebuke on March 14, 2026, following Lai's comments at an event marking 30 years since Taiwan began direct elections for its regional leader.

Chen accused Lai of distorting historical facts and 'creating confrontation' across the Taiwan Strait through what he described as 'false narratives.' The spokesperson emphasized that cross-strait relations remain rooted in the one-China principle, stating: 'Taiwan has been part of China since ancient times – this status remains unchanged regardless of electoral outcomes.'

The statement warned against using 'different social systems' as justification for independence movements, asserting that peaceful reunification remains the ultimate goal. Chen called on Taiwan residents to reject separatist agendas and collaborate with mainland counterparts to maintain regional stability.

This development comes amid heightened attention to cross-strait relations following recent economic agreements between mainland cities and Taiwan's technology sector. Analysts suggest the mainland's response reflects ongoing concerns about political rhetoric affecting economic cooperation.
