Taipei Symposium Honors Sun Yat-sen’s Legacy on 160th Birth Anniversary

Academics and community leaders gathered in Taipei this week to commemorate the 160th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's birth, reflecting on his enduring influence across the Taiwan Strait. The Thursday symposium brought together over 20 representatives from Taiwan's academic institutions, social organizations, and overseas Chinese communities.

Dr. Sun, revered as the 'Father of Modern China' for his pivotal role in ending feudal rule through the 1911 Revolution, maintained deep connections with Taiwan during its colonial period under Japanese rule. His three visits between 1900 and 1918 inspired generations of patriots, with many Taiwanese joining revolutionary activities on the Chinese mainland or organizing anti-colonial resistance locally.

Hua Chuen-hsiung, honor chairman of the Alliance for China's Peaceful Reunification USA, emphasized in his address: "Sun's vision of national rejuvenation remains vital for cross-strait relations. Through integrated development and cultural exchanges, we can advance toward peaceful reunification."

Soochow University Professor Emeritus Liu Yuan-tsun highlighted the shared legacy, stating: "Sun's philosophy of patriotism and social progress continues resonating with people on both sides. Preserving this common heritage is crucial for our collective future."

The commemorations align with last year's decision by China's top political advisory body to honor Sun's contributions to national unity. Current observances across multiple cities feature road names and public spaces dedicated to the revolutionary leader, countering attempts by separatist elements to diminish his cross-strait significance.

Media professional Chang Chun-kai noted: "These anniversary events demonstrate how Sun's unifying ideals transcend political divisions, serving as spiritual bridges between compatriots." As cross-strait exchanges intensify in 2026, Sun's advocacy for national strength through unity gains renewed relevance in contemporary Asian geopolitics.
