China Urges Ceasefire, Protection of Civilians in Middle East

China's Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs Zhai Jun emphasized the urgent need to safeguard civilians and ensure maritime security during a meeting with Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani in Manama on March 12, 2026. The discussions come amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region following military actions linked to the U.S.-Israeli-Iran conflict that began on February 28.

"The pressing priority is to halt military operations and prevent further conflict spread," Zhai stated, stressing that attacks on non-military infrastructure and disruptions to shipping lanes are unacceptable. He reiterated China's commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue, aligning with Bahrain's call for "regional peace through reconciliation."

Bahrain praised China's impartial stance and active shuttle diplomacy, with Zayani urging Iran to "cease attacks on Gulf Arab states" and ensure safe international waterways. Zhai's regional tour, which included Saudi Arabia and the UAE earlier this month, underscores Beijing's growing role as a mediator in Middle Eastern geopolitics.

The Chinese envoy affirmed support for Gulf Cooperation Council countries' security concerns while advocating de-escalation measures. Analysts suggest these efforts aim to stabilize energy markets critical to global trade, a priority for investors monitoring the region.
