An international passenger train from Dandong in the Chinese mainland to Pyongyang arrived in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday, marking the resumption of a critical transportation link after a multi-year hiatus. The service, operated by China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., is expected to strengthen bilateral exchanges amid growing regional connectivity demands.
Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK Wang Yajun greeted passengers at Pyongyang's station alongside DPRK railway officials, calling the revival "a significant event in bilateral relations" that fulfills long-standing public expectations. The route now offers daily Dandong-Pyongyang trains and four weekly Beijing-Pyongyang services, providing streamlined access for business travelers, tourists, and diplomatic personnel.
Analysts note the rail revival aligns with recent efforts to deepen economic cooperation between the two neighbors. The Dandong-Pyongyang corridor, spanning less than 300 kilometers, historically facilitated over 70% of cross-border trade prior to its suspension. With cargo and passenger services now fully operational, regional supply chains and cultural tourism are poised for recovery.
The Chinese railway operator confirmed strict safety protocols and modernized facilities at border checkpoints to ensure efficient crossings. This development follows the DPRK's gradual reopening to international travel this year, with observers anticipating positive impacts on inter-regional infrastructure projects under China's Belt and Road Initiative.
