From Poverty to Prosperity: Liuzhai Village's Transformation
Liuzhai Village, located in Huguan County, Shanxi Province, has emerged as a model of rural revitalization, with its per capita income surpassing 25,000 yuan ($3,634) in 2026. CPPCC member Cheng Yuzhen highlighted the village's success during the recent Members' Corridor event in Beijing, attributing it to China's targeted poverty alleviation policies and sustained local efforts.
A Journey of Three Decades
Once plagued by inadequate infrastructure and economic stagnation, Liuzhai began its turnaround after Cheng became secretary of the village's Communist Party of China branch in 2011. 'We prioritized basic needs first—water, electricity, and roads—before developing industries,' Cheng explained. By 2016, the village had eradicated poverty entirely.
Six Pillar Industries Drive Growth
The village leveraged traditional liquor-brewing techniques to establish a modern distillery, creating a homegrown brand that now contributes significantly to local incomes. Tourism initiatives, including bonfire gatherings and fruit-picking festivals, attracted over 10,000 visitors in 2025 alone.
Youth Return to Rural Roots
With improved opportunities, young residents are increasingly returning to launch homestays and e-commerce ventures through livestreaming platforms. 'Our revitalization isn't just economic—it's about rebuilding community,' Cheng emphasized, noting the village's growing population and enhanced living environment.
