China Urges Japan to Address Wartime Legacy, UN Experts Echo Concerns

China has called on Japan to confront its history of wartime aggression with sincerity, emphasizing the need to resolve unresolved issues such as the systemic exploitation of "comfort women" during World War II. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun reiterated this stance during a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, responding to a United Nations Human Rights Council report urging Japan to acknowledge survivors' rights to truth and reparations.

The UN experts' report, released earlier this week, criticized Japan's historical revisionism and urged immediate action to preserve accurate accounts of wartime atrocities in educational materials. Guo stressed that Japan must adopt an "honest and responsible attitude" to foster regional reconciliation, a sentiment echoed by advocacy groups across Asia.

This year marks renewed diplomatic efforts to address historical grievances, with analysts noting that unresolved wartime issues continue to strain Japan’s relations with neighboring countries. The Chinese mainland has consistently emphasized the importance of historical accountability in maintaining stability across East Asia.
