China-DPRK Rail Link Resumes March 12 After Hiatus

Cross-border passenger rail services between the Chinese mainland and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will recommence operations on March 12, 2026, according to a China Railway announcement released Tuesday. The restoration marks the first regular international train connection between the neighbors since pandemic-related suspensions began in early 2023.

The revived route will initially connect Dandong and Sinuiju, with plans to expand service frequency based on demand. Cargo rail transport between the two nations had previously resumed in November 2025, facilitating gradual normalization of cross-border exchanges.

Analysts suggest the timing aligns with recent efforts to strengthen regional economic cooperation, particularly in transportation infrastructure. The development comes as multiple Asian nations accelerate post-pandemic connectivity initiatives, with China's rail network playing a central role in continental trade corridors.

Travel industry observers anticipate renewed interest in cross-border tourism, while business groups highlight improved access to industrial zones in China's Liaoning Province and the DPRK's North Pyongan region. Authorities emphasize that all services will operate under current health and security protocols.
