China’s Maritime Fleet and Ports Lead Global Trade, Says NPC Deputy

China's maritime industry has achieved global leadership through its world-class fleet and port network, according to National People's Congress deputy Ni Di. Speaking on Monday, the veteran shipping executive revealed that maritime transport now handles 95% of China's import-export cargo, with the country accounting for nearly one-third of global maritime trade volume.

Ni, a 28-year industry veteran at China COSCO Shipping Corporation Ltd who has visited over 30 countries and regions, emphasized the strategic importance of China's shipping infrastructure. "Our maritime capabilities form the backbone of international supply chains," said the 14th NPC delegate, highlighting the synergy between China's 2,500-berth port system and its modern merchant fleet.

The development comes as global trade patterns shift, with Chinese ports like Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan maintaining their positions among the world's busiest. Analysts note this maritime strength supports China's position as the largest trading nation, particularly crucial in 2026 as Asian economies continue driving post-pandemic recovery.

For investors and business leaders, China's port modernization initiatives present opportunities in smart logistics and green shipping technologies. The country's Shipping Index, tracked by major financial institutions, remains a key indicator of global economic health.
