China’s Ethnic Unity Law Draft Gains Momentum at 2026 Two Sessions

As China's annual Two Sessions convene in March 2026, a draft law on promoting ethnic unity has emerged as a focal point of national policy discussions. Zheng Qian, member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Deputy Director of the Chinese National Museum of Ethnology, emphasized the legislation's significance during a group discussion with cultural and art sector advisors.

"This law represents a distinctive Chinese approach to fostering social harmony," Zheng told CGTN's Yang Yan, highlighting its potential to strengthen cultural integration while preserving regional identities. The proposal aligns with broader efforts to address regional development gaps and promote shared prosperity across ethnic groups.

Analysts note the timing coincides with increased investment in western regions and recent cultural preservation initiatives. The draft law reportedly emphasizes educational cooperation, economic partnerships, and intercommunity dialogue frameworks.

As deliberations continue, observers anticipate the legislation could set precedents for balancing modernization with traditional cultural values—a challenge facing many Asian nations in 2026.
