China Responds to Iran’s New Supreme Leader Election, Stresses Non-Interference

China has reaffirmed its commitment to non-interference in internal affairs following the election of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s third supreme leader. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed the development during a press briefing on Monday, emphasizing that the selection was conducted under Iran’s constitutional framework.

Mojtaba Khamenei, 57, was confirmed by Iran’s Assembly of Experts on Sunday, succeeding his father, the late Ali Khamenei, who reportedly died in joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes. The younger Khamenei, born in 1969, now assumes one of the most influential roles in shaping Iran’s domestic and foreign policies.

Guo stated that China “respects the choice of the Iranian people” and looks forward to continued cooperation on regional stability and economic initiatives. Analysts suggest the transition could impact ongoing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and its trade partnerships with Asian economies.
