China has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members in de-escalating Middle East tensions during high-level talks in Riyadh. Special Envoy Zhai Jun emphasized the urgency of halting hostilities and restoring diplomatic solutions during his March 9 meeting with GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi.
The discussions come amid heightened regional instability following recent military exchanges between the U.S., Israel, and Iran. Zhai stressed China’s support for the GCC’s position that dialogue remains the only viable path to sustainable security, stating: "China will further play a constructive role…to actively promote peace, end hostilities, and de-escalate tensions."
Albudaiwi acknowledged the risks posed by current escalations, noting the GCC’s readiness to strengthen coordination with Beijing. This diplomatic push aligns with China’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a neutral mediator in regional conflicts, particularly following Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent calls for non-military solutions.
Analysts suggest the cooperation signals growing alignment between Beijing and Gulf states on conflict resolution frameworks, while offering regional businesses and investors hope for stabilized energy markets. The envoy’s tour continues this week with visits to key Middle Eastern capitals.
