China Champions Women’s Empowerment in Tech and Maritime Innovation

As the world marks International Women's Day on March 8, 2026, China's advancements in gender equality and women's leadership in technology and maritime industries are drawing global attention. Li Ying, a professor at Dalian Maritime University and member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), recently outlined China's vision for a 'bigger, smarter, greener' maritime future during the annual session of China's top political advisory body.

Li highlighted groundbreaking achievements including China's world-leading maritime fleet, the completion of its first domestically-built large cruise ship, and pioneering green port initiatives. Notably, Chinese companies currently hold 70% of global new green ship orders, with eight zero-carbon pilot ports operational along the coast.

Her work exemplifies the rising influence of women in China's tech sector, where female professionals now constitute nearly half of the workforce. Women are increasingly assuming leadership roles in driving innovation across strategic industries from artificial intelligence to renewable energy.

This progress aligns with President Xi Jinping's recent International Women's Day message, which emphasized women's critical role in shaping human civilization and advancing Chinese modernization. 'On the new journey of Chinese modernization, every woman is a star,' Xi stated, reaffirming the nation's commitment to creating opportunities for women to thrive.

China's approach combines policy support with practical initiatives in education and employment, fostering an environment where women contribute significantly to technological breakthroughs and sustainable development goals. As global markets watch Asia's economic trajectory, China's integration of gender equality into its innovation strategy offers insights for international development models.
