China's Daji Gas Field, the nation's largest coalbed methane production base in Shanxi Province, has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing 4 billion cubic meters (bcm) in annual output capacity this year. This breakthrough strengthens domestic energy security while advancing low-carbon development goals.
Technical Triumph in Unconventional Energy
Operating at depths exceeding 2,130 meters, the field leverages cutting-edge extraction technologies to tap into coalbed methane reserves previously deemed inaccessible. Since January 2026, operators have added 16 new wells and 250 million cubic meters of capacity, driving daily production to 11 million cubic meters – a 32% year-on-year increase.
From Experimental Project to Energy Powerhouse
First achieving industrial gas flow in 2019 through CNPC's innovation program, the field now supplies over 80% of China's coalbed methane output. Proven geological reserves of 400 bcm position it as a long-term energy asset, particularly valuable for reducing reliance on imported natural gas.
