China has unveiled an ambitious plan to produce 1.45 trillion jin (725 million tonnes) of grain annually by 2030, marking a strategic push to fortify national food security amid climate challenges and geopolitical shifts. The target forms part of the draft 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) released this year, building on recent agricultural achievements.
This new benchmark follows China's record 1.43 trillion jin harvest in 2025, as reported by Huang Sanwen of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The 1.4% production increase target comes as agricultural experts warn of mounting pressures from extreme weather patterns affecting crop yields across Asia.
"The elevation from 1.4 to 1.45 trillion jin reflects both our technical capabilities and strategic necessities," Huang stated during the annual CPPCC session. Analysts note the plan emphasizes sustainable intensification through advanced irrigation systems, drought-resistant crop varieties, and precision farming technologies.
With global grain markets experiencing increased volatility, China's move aims to maintain 95% self-sufficiency in staple crops. The strategy includes upgrading 80 million hectares of high-standard farmland and implementing AI-driven agricultural monitoring systems by 2028.
