China Expresses Condolences Over Passing of Iran’s Supreme Leader

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Miao Deyu visited the Iranian Embassy in Beijing on Thursday, March 5, 2026, to convey China's official condolences following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The diplomatic gesture underscores Beijing's commitment to maintaining stable relations with Tehran amid regional uncertainties.

Miao emphasized China's 'profound sympathy' during his meeting with Iranian diplomats, stating that Khamenei's leadership 'contributed significantly to Iran's development and China-Iran strategic cooperation.' The visit comes as global observers monitor potential shifts in Middle Eastern geopolitics following the transition of leadership in Iran.

Analysts note that China has consistently prioritized dialogue with Iran, particularly regarding energy security and the implementation of their 25-year comprehensive cooperation agreement signed in 2021. This latest diplomatic engagement aligns with Beijing's broader strategy of fostering multilateral partnerships across Asia.

While the Iranian government prepares for succession procedures, Chinese officials have reaffirmed their commitment to cross-regional stability. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin stated earlier this week that China 'stands ready to work with Iran's new leadership to deepen practical cooperation.'
