China will accelerate imports of premium consumer services while expanding exports in cultural sectors this year, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao announced during a March 6 press conference at the National People's Congress. The initiative forms part of Beijing's strategy to rebalance trade dynamics through service sector innovation.
Medical and healthcare services feature prominently in the import expansion plan, with authorities pledging to leverage visa-free policies to facilitate cross-border service exchanges. Simultaneously, China aims to commercialize its cultural heritage by boosting exports of traditional Chinese medicine, culinary services, and cultural experiences.
"This dual approach strengthens global economic integration while showcasing China's soft power," Wang stated, emphasizing the program's alignment with domestic consumption upgrades. The announcement comes as China reports a 14.2% year-on-year increase in service trade volume during Q1 2026.
Business analysts note the measures could create new opportunities in cross-border healthcare partnerships and cultural IP development. Tourism industry representatives anticipate streamlined processes for international medical travelers and cultural exchange programs.
