Premier Li Urges Governance Focus Amid China’s 2026 Priorities

Chinese Premier Li Qiang underscored the necessity for officials to align governance performance with evolving national goals during his address at the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress on March 5, 2026. Delivering the government work report, Li emphasized that new developmental challenges require heightened accountability and adherence to the Communist Party of China's (CPC) principles of disciplined governance.

Li called for officials at all levels to maintain unwavering alignment with the CPC Central Committee and its core leader, Xi Jinping, in both ideology and action. He reiterated commitments to full and rigorous self-governance within the Party, urging strict implementation of the central leadership's eight-point decision on improving bureaucratic efficiency and public engagement.

The premier highlighted intensified anti-corruption measures and regulatory oversight as key priorities this year, stressing that officials must prioritize tangible outcomes for citizens. "Performance must be measured by adherence to objective laws and concrete contributions to the people's well-being," Li stated, framing 2026 as a pivotal year for institutional reforms.

Analysts note the address reinforces China's focus on stabilizing governance mechanisms amid global economic uncertainties, offering clarity for investors monitoring policy directions in Asia's largest economy.
