China Urges Unified Global Approach Against Terrorism at UN

China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, called for an end to double standards in counter-terrorism efforts during a high-level briefing on March 5, 2026. Speaking at the review of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, Fu emphasized the need for unified international action to address evolving security threats.

Root Causes and Collective Action

Fu stressed that reducing conflicts, poverty, and civilizational discrimination remains critical to eliminating terrorism's breeding grounds. 'The international community must firmly reject selective approaches,' he stated, noting that terrorism now intertwines with transnational crime, social inequality, and emerging technologies.

Regional Security Priorities

The ambassador specifically addressed Afghanistan's role in regional stability, urging authorities to prevent terrorist regrouping. He also called on Syria's transitional government to combat UN-listed terrorist groups and secure border areas. Regarding Pakistan, Fu urged immediate UN sanctions against the Balochistan Liberation Army following recent attacks.

Strengthening Global Partnerships

Highlighting China's contributions, Fu referenced counter-terrorism projects in Africa and Central Asia funded through the China-UN Peace and Development Fund. He advocated enhanced cooperation with the African Union and other regional bodies ahead of the Strategy's ninth review later this year.
