China Unveils 2026 Tech Roadmap: Quantum, AI, and 6G in Focus

China has outlined an ambitious strategy to dominate emerging technologies through its 2026 government work report and draft 15th Five-Year Plan, signaling a major push for scientific self-reliance. Submitted to the National People's Congress on March 3, the plans position integrated circuits, quantum computing, and brain-computer interfaces as national priorities.

Strategic Industries Take Flight

This year's blueprint identifies aviation, biomedicine, and the low-altitude economy as immediate growth drivers. The low-altitude sector – encompassing drone logistics and urban air mobility – is projected to become a $73 billion industry by 2030 according to state researchers.

Future Tech Investments

The 2026-2030 plan earmarks extraordinary measures for:

  • Next-gen AI systems with physical embodiment capabilities
  • 6G network infrastructure development
  • Commercial nuclear fusion energy prototypes

Innovation Ecosystem Expansion

Three new international sci-tech hubs will be established to attract global talent, building on existing innovation clusters in Beijing and Shanghai. The government aims to increase R&D spending by 7% annually through 2030, with particular focus on semiconductor manufacturing and advanced materials.

"These plans represent our technological sovereignty strategy," noted Premier Li Qiang during the legislative session. "By 2030, we aim to lead in at least five frontier technology fields critical to national development."
