China Dispatches Envoy to Middle East Amid Rising Tensions

China has announced it will send Special Envoy Zhai Jun to the Middle East this week to mediate escalating regional tensions following recent military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran. The move comes as part of Beijing's intensified diplomatic efforts to prevent further conflict escalation in 2026.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed the envoy's mission during Thursday's press briefing, stating China will "work with all sides to maintain communication and pool consensus for peace." Zhai, the Chinese government's veteran mediator on Middle Eastern affairs, is expected to visit multiple capitals to facilitate dialogue between conflicting parties.

This initiative aligns with China's growing role as a stabilizer in global hotspots, particularly following its successful mediation of the 2025 Saudi Arabia-Iran reconciliation. Analysts suggest Beijing's current mediation push could strengthen economic partnerships in the region while demonstrating its conflict-resolution capabilities on the world stage.
