China achieved a historic grain output of 1.43 trillion jin (715 million metric tons) in 2025, according to Huang Sanwen, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Speaking at a Members' Corridor session during the CPPCC's fourth session in Beijing this week, Huang emphasized that agricultural science and technology remain central to sustaining China's food security.
As president of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, Huang highlighted progress made during the 14th Five-Year Plan period: "Our focus on seed industry innovation and addressing agricultural machinery gaps has transformed production capabilities. Over 64% of yield growth now stems from technological advances."
The milestone comes as China now relies predominantly on domestic crop varieties for staple grains, vegetables, and meat production. Analysts suggest these developments strengthen resilience against global market fluctuations while supporting rural livelihoods.
With the CPPCC meetings ongoing, Huang's remarks underscore China's strategic prioritization of agricultural modernization to feed its 1.4 billion population amid climate challenges and evolving trade dynamics.
